Science Shows that Certain Vitamins and Minerals May Are Beneficial When Taken at Night
Is there really a best time to take your vitamins? Vitamins that
your body needs for energy and mental clarity, B complex in particular, are best
taken during the day. However, when it's time to relax and unwind at the end of
the day, NiteVites™ blends the calming benefits of magnesium along with the bone
building attributes of calcium coupled with key co-factors, like melatonin, that
help the mind and body relax. With NiteVites™ you can sleep more restfully while
you build strong bones and maintain healthy muscles. The nutrients in NiteVites™
also promote cell building and bone and joint repair functions that work while
you sleep. The case for taking calcium at night has good research behind it.
This is especially important for postmenopausal women. A study published in the
British Medical Journal found that calcium is most effective for bone health in
this group when taken at night. Magnesium, an essential mineral also required
for healthy bones and muscles, and it functions as a nutritional partner to
calcium also aiding in the process of helping people relax and fall asleep.*
Magnificent Magnesium – Are You Deficient in this Vital Mineral?
The 1999-2000 US National Health and Nutrition Examination
Survey suggest that substantial numbers of adults in the United States fail to
consume recommended amounts of magnesium. As the fourth most abundant mineral in
the body, magnesium is crucial to your good health. About half of your total
body magnesium is kept in your bones while the other half is distributed
throughout cells of your body. This vital mineral is needed for more than 300
biochemical reactions in your body, which means it acts like a spark plug for
the machinery of cellular metabolism is important for energy transport within
the cell. Because of the vital roles magnesium plays in a wide array of
metabolic functions in the body and its impact on health and longevity, it is
often call "the Magnificent Mineral". Magnesium can be found in the diet
although it is challenging to consume enough for optimal health through diet
alone. Top magnesium rich foods include green leafy vegetables, black beans,
halibut, nuts, pumpkin seeds, whole grains, tofu..
Magnesium plays key roles in the maintenance of:
- Bone health*
- Cardiovascular function and healthy heart rhythm*
- Healthy blood sugar control and already normal blood pressure*
- Healthy brain and immune system function*
Along with calcium citrate and magnesium citrate—both well-absorbed, bioavailable forms of calcium and magnesium—NiteVites™ also provides:
Vitamin D: Without adequate vitamin D intake, the body
cannot properly metabolize calcium. Vitamin D strengthens bones and also may
enhance muscle strength, due to its direct effect on calcium transport in
muscles. Because of its unique interplay with calcium, vitamin D supports the
health of bones and muscles. An explosion of contemporary research has revealed
that vitamin D is critical for the function of multiple organs and systems,
including cardiovascular function, immune health, the brain and more.*
Vitamin K2: The secret to relaxed muscles? Occasional muscle
cramping is a common age-related concern that can detrimentally impact sleep
quality, or even general comfort when we are awake. Interestingly, new research
suggests that daily supplementation with Vitamin K2 may help to alleviate muscle
cramping. A recent open field pilot study with 19 older subjects showed that 3
months of supplementation with Vitamin K2 resulted in improvements in cramping
episodes. While more research is needed to confirm this amazing initial finding,
consumers looking for an alternative to help support muscle comfort now
have a great option.
Zinc: Like magnesium, zinc is a mineral that wears many
functional hats in human nutrition. Zinc is needed for healthy immune function
and for tissue building and repair. Zinc helps maintain the integrity of skin,
the membrane linings of the digestive tract, bone strength, and healthy eyes. In
men, zinc is essential for keeping the prostate healthy. Like magnesium, zinc is
a co-factor for enzymes that power up metabolic functions in cells.*
Boron: Boron is a trace mineral that plays a key role in
bone metabolism through its interactions with calcium, magnesium and vitamin D.
Boron has been shown to decrease urinary excretion of calcium and magnesium in
postmenopausal women.* Boron also supports optimum vitamin D metabolism.*
Resveratrol: Researched for its healthy-aging effects and
its potent antioxidant activity, resveratrol supports the circulatory system and
helps maintain normal blood flow to muscles and organs. Laboratory studies
confirm that resveratrol can increase nitric oxide production in blood vessels,
which supports circulation and cardiovascular health.*
Melatonin: As shown in multiple research studies, melatonin taken as a dietary
supplement supports sound sleep by helping to regulate the body’s diurnal and
circadian rhythm of sleeping and waking.*
Research Update: Meta-Analysis of Studies Confirms Melatonin Improves Sleep Quality
Published in the scientific journal PLoS One, a meta-analysis of 19 clinical
studies involving 1683 adults and children with sub-optimal sleep found that
melatonin supplementation helped subjects fall asleep faster, stay
asleep longer and enjoy better quality sleep. (PLoS One. 2013 May 17;8(5):e63773.)
There is evidence that melatonin also helps maintain a healthy body weight
and energy metabolism, as demonstrated in a 2016 study on postmenopausal women.*
Published in the scientific journal Clinical Endocrinology, this double-blind,
placebo controlled study enrolled 81 women who took either 1 mg or 3 mg of
melatonin nightly. Compared to subjects in the placebo group, women taking
melatonin had decreases in fat mass and increases in lean body mass. These
results "suggest a possibly beneficial effect on body composition and lipid
metabolism," as stated in the report. (Clin Endocrinol 2016 Mar;84(3):342-7.)
Melatonin also has benefits for men over and above its effect on sleep.*
Melatonin supplementation was found to support muscle recovery after strenuous
exercise by reducing oxidative stress in muscle tissue, in a study reported in
the Journal of Pineal Research. (J Pineal Res 2011 Nov;51(4)373-80).
